Katherine Wells and Beth Sanchez, Vecinos del Rio
Mesa Prieta Rock Art Recording Project

People have occupied Mesa Prieta and the surrounding lowlands along the Rio Grande and Rio Chama for about 10,000 years. As long as 5,000 years ago, hunters and gatherers began creating the rock art found here. Although most of the petroglyphs originated with the ancestors of the present day Pueblo people, the early Spanish settlers also made a significant number of images during the historic period. Vecinos del Rio, a grass-roots organization, recognized that the petroglyphs offer an irreplaceable link to the past. The group strongly believes that preserving that history makes up a critical part of the local quality of life and culture, as well as the more broad interests of the scientific understanding that lies on the Mesa. In 1999, Vecinos began organizing a project that hopes to survey and record an estimated 20,000 petroglyphs on Mesa Prieta. With the volunteer support of professional archeologists, Vecinos will also conduct archeological surveys for as many sites as possible in order to provide a more comprehensive context for the rock art recording. An indispensable long-term activity of the project is loading information into a Geographic Information System (GIS) to integrate the entire project.

Katherine Wells is an artist and board member of Vecinos del Rio. She is also chairperson of the organization's Petroglyph Committee.

Beth Sanchez has experience in program management from Peace Corps and the U.S. Forest Service. She has worked as coordinator of this project since April 2003.

Note: this talk was originally scheduled for Feb. 12, but had to be rescheduled due to snow.
