Northern Chapter of the New Mexico Network for Women in Science and Engineering LUNCHTIME TALK SERIES sponsored by the Synergy Center and Zocher Corporation Thursday, June 3, 2004 Bldg 1, Los Alamos Research Park Synergy Center Conference Room, 3rd flr Talk at 12:00 |
Katrin Heitmann, ISR-1, LANL
The Cosmological Revolution |
Cosmology has come a long way: From hints of the vast distances between stars, first appreciated in the mid-nineteenth century, to today's almost complete characterization of the geometry and matter content of the Universe. Results from cosmic microwave background observations, studies of the large-scale distribution of matter in the Universe, and of the redshift distribution of supernovae, yield an impressively consistent picture of the fundamental make-up of the Universe. In this talk Katrin will first give a brief overview of how theoretical and observational cosmology has evolved. She will then discuss how present-day observations can help in building a consistent picture of the very early Universe - back even to the first 10-43 seconds!
Katrin Heitmann received her PhD in 2000 at the Univerity of Dortmund with Prof. J. Baacke. Katrin joined T-division at LANL as a Director's Postdoctoral Fellow in the fall of 2000. In January 2003 she moved to ISR-division as Limited term staff member.
Members and Nonmembers Welcome! Open to the Public |
The room is reserved from 11:30 to 1:30 so people to can get together and network before and/or after the talk. Bring your lunch or pick up something at the Hot Rocks Java Cafe on the 2nd floor. You are welcome to come early, late, or for just the talk at noon, and questions are encouraged!
