Los Alamos Women in Science
Northern Chapter of the New Mexico Network for Women in Science and Engineering
LUNCHTIME TALK SERIES
sponsored by
the   Synergy Center   and   the   Zocher Corporation

Talk at 12:00, Tuesday, July 13, 2004
Bldg 1, Los Alamos Research Park
Synergy Center Conference Room, 3rd flr

Cynthia Olson Reichhardt, T-12, LANL
Computer simulations of glassy disordered media

In liquid and glassy systems, striking dynamical heterogeneities can occur in which the motion in the sample becomes strongly nonuniform. Portions of the sample may appear frozen while other portions are rapidly moving over a finite time scale. We use computer simulations of charged particles to explore this heterogeneity in both liquids and glasses, and find interesting behavior including correlated dislocation motion and an effective attraction between moving charges.

BIOGRAPHY: Cynthia obtained her B.A. from Luther College in 1994 and her Ph.D. in physics from University of Michigan in 1998. After getting her doctorate, Cynthia did a postdoc in physics at UC-Davis with R. Scalettar and G. Zimanyi. Cynthia came to LANL as a Director's Fellow postdoc in 2000, and has been a staff member in T-12 since 2002.

Members and Nonmembers Welcome!
Open to the Public

The room is reserved from 11:30 to 1:30 so people to can get together and network before and/or after the talk. Bring your lunch or pick up something at the Hot Rocks Java Cafe on the 2nd floor. You are welcome to come early, late, or for just the talk at noon, and questions are encouraged!

In the event of a large audience, we may be in the Zocher Corporation's conference room across from the Synergy Center conference room.

Use of the Synergy Center conference room was donated by the Synergy Center, an "economic development incubator" with the goal of promoting development of R&D and technology business activities. Contact the Synergy Center receptionist at 663-5001 for more information on the Synergy Center.

Use of the Zocher Corporation conference room was donated by the Zocher Corporation, which provides project management services. Contact Stacy Terp at 663-5379 for more information on the Zocher Corporation.

You need a parking pass to park at the Research Park!

There are a limited number of 1-hour spots in the small parking area near the front of the lot which do not require parking permits. They are clearly marked as 1-hour spots.
