Metal Casting: Experiments and Simulations

ABSTRACT

"Casting has been done for thousands of years. Traditionally there are many "rules of thumb" used to design molds and pick casting parameters. Sound castings (without defects) are created by trial and error. More recently computers are being used to simulate the casting process and determine optimum casting parameters to create not only a "sound" castings but also to obtain the desired microstructure and properties."

"A commercial computer code, FLOW-3D, is being used at MST-6 to simulate castings. Experiments are also performed to validate the code and give new insight about fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification. Telluride, a new LANL ASCI code, is also being verified and validated at MST-6. Results from simulations and experiments will be discussed."
