Talk at 12:00: Kathy Prestridge, DX-3, LANL "Fluid Instabilities: Ongoing research and a practical demonstration" |
I will discuss research that I have been working on at the lab since June of '98, when I first joined DX-3 as a postdoc (I'm now a staff member). My work involves the first quantitative measurements of velocity fields of a very high speed, shock accelerated flow. We are interested in the evolution of a heavy layer of fluid embedded within air when it is impulsively accelerated by a shock wave. The resultant fluid instability is visualized with high-speed cameras and custom-designed pulsed lasers. The results are being used to help validate some of the numerical calculations being done at the lab as part of the ASCI program.
I will also perform a demonstration of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. This demonstration has been taught to teachers of grades K-12, as well as performed in classrooms at local schools and at professional meetings. It is an easy way to demonstrate basic fluid properties to children of any age, and it can be reproduced easily at home with standard kitchen supplies.
Sideroom C is reserved from 11:30 to 1:30 for people who like to eat earlier or later, and informal discussion. You are welcome to come for just the talk at noon, and questions are encouraged!
