Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) Update |
The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) has been receiving Transuranic (TRU) waste for over 6 years. It has received over 3700 shipments comprised of over 69,000 containers. This accounts for approximately 30,000 cubic meters of waste in the underground repository. Some members of the public worried about potential dangers from the transportation of the waste. To date, incidents have been relatively minor.
DOE has requested several major permit modifications of its Hazardous Waste Permit from the New Mexico Environment Department, including permission to dispose of remote-handled waste. Future generations will be warned that the site is not in a natural state using a variety of warnings and messages.
Members and Nonmembers Welcome! Open to the Public |
Note: LAWIS and NMNWSE do not have any policy on WIPP, pro or con. Persons wishing to express alternate viewpoints should contact the LunchTalk organizer to arrange speaking - see LunchTalks webpage for contact info.
