Large Magnets and New Science at the National High Magnetic Field Lab Dr. Vivien Zapf, MPA-NHMFL, LANL |
The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory has built the most powerful magnets in the world, and our branch here in Los Alamos has just set a new record for
the largest non-destructive pulsed-field magnet. I will discuss the current state-of-the-art for magnet technology and the challenges that come with it. I will
also give an overview of the type of research that we do and the new fundamental states of matter that develop at high fields as well as the broad applications of
magnet technology in daily life.

Biography - Vivien Zapf studies the fundamental properties of materials at high magnetic fields and low temperatures including quantum magnets, superconductors and other correlated-electron systems. Recently she has been investigating Bose-Einstein Condensation in quantum magnets. Vivien received her Ph.D. at the University of California at San Diego in 2003 with Prof. Brian Maple. She was then awarded a Milliken post-doctoral fellowship at Caltech, and a director-funded post-doctoral fellowship at Los Alamos. She is now permanent staff at the National High Magnetic Field Lab in Los Alamos, NM.
